(Author: Xie Lingling)On the afternoon of April 13, 2026, the Department of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL) at the School of Foreign Languages held a mid-semester faculty student forum in Conference Room 119 of the Humanities Building. The forum was chaired by Xie Lingling, head of the TCSOL Teaching and Research Section. Faculty representatives, including Wei Yu, Zhang Yanmei, Dong Qiong, Wu Qiong, Jia Wenxia, and Sun Qiuyue, joined more than 30 student representatives from the department’s 2023, 2024, and 2025 entry cohorts. Together, they discussed coursework, internships and practical training, competitions, and pathways to recommended postgraduate admission, addressing students’ questions about their studies and future development.

In her opening remarks, Xie explained the purpose of the forum and encouraged students to speak openly about their learning experiences. Student representatives raised questions and offered suggestions on the curriculum and teaching methods. Faculty members listened attentively and responded to each concern, drawing on the characteristics of the discipline. They also expressed their commitment to refining course design in response to student feedback and making course content more relevant to students’ needs and practical applications. Internships and practical training were a particular focus of the discussion. Faculty members provided detailed information about internship locations, schedules, and requirements, and encouraged students to plan ahead and develop the skills needed to stand out.

Faculty members also introduced competitions relevant to the discipline and encouraged students across all year groups to participate as a way to develop their abilities. In response to questions about preparing for postgraduate admission through recommendation without taking the national entrance examination, they emphasized that “GPA and comprehensive student assessment scores form the foundation, while competition achievements also carry significant weight.” They encouraged students to explore interdisciplinary competitions, including those in computing, to strengthen their overall competitiveness. Addressing academic difficulties raised by some students, faculty members advised them to “find study methods that work for you, set clear goals, and adopt a flexible approach to learning,” laying a solid foundation for further study or employment.

In her closing remarks, Xie said that the teaching and research section would review the feedback gathered during the forum and use it to guide ongoing improvements in teaching. Faculty members would also offer more targeted support through regular discussions and individual guidance. Student representatives said the forum had answered many of their questions and given them a clearer understanding of their academic and career pathways. They planned to adjust their study plans in light of the advice received, take an active part in internships and competitions, and further develop their professional knowledge and skills.

The forum provided an effective platform for communication between faculty and students, fostering mutual learning and offering guidance for students’ academic and professional development. The TCSOL Department will continue to respond to student needs, improve its curriculum, and support students as they work toward their goals.
