Embracing the AI Era, Exploring the Power of Language — School of Foreign Languages Holds 2026 English Major Orientation for Freshmen

(Reported by Correspondent Wang Wei) To help 2026 English majors quickly grasp the essence of their program, clarify their direction of development, and plan their university studies and career paths in a scientific manner, School of Foreign Languages of Wuhan Institute of Technology held a 2026 English Major Orientation in Room 313 of the Liberal Arts Building in the morning of September 14. The event was delivered by Wang Wei, Director of the English Department, and was attended by Zhang Yunfeng, Deputy Director of the English Department, Yan Xi, Coordinator of the English (with a Minor in E-Commerce) program, and all 2026 English majors.

At the meeting, Mr. Wang Wei addressed the realistic question of whether learning English still holds value in the AI era. Drawing on industry data and relevant remarks by NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang, he pointed out that although AI can handle basic translation, it cannot replace human capabilities in contextual understanding, cultural empathy, and creative communication, and that high-end language talent remains in short supply in the job market. Through case studies of outstanding alumni who have pursued interdisciplinary careers, the lecture showcased the diverse development possibilities of the English major and emphasized that the essence of the program lies in learning to “connect” — cultivating comprehensive abilities to think, judge, and influence the world in English. In line with the School’s “E+” interdisciplinary talent development model, the meeting introduced the four concentrations offered by the School: Culture and Communication, Education, Business, and Foreign-Related Legal Affairs. It presented the training objectives, core courses, and practical training platforms of each concentration, and encouraged students to pursue interdisciplinary “English+” pathways through minors and dual degrees. The session also provided an overview of important certificate examinations, including TEM-4, TEM-8, CATTI, and the International Talent English Test (ITET), and, using examples of outstanding graduates, clarified multiple development paths in terms of both academic advancement and employment.

During the Q&A session, freshmen actively raised questions on topics such as AI and language learning, academic planning, and interdisciplinary development. The faculty addressed their questions by drawing on academic competitions, practical platforms, and the growth experiences of former students, guiding the freshmen to plan their university years well and engage proactively in hands-on exploration.

Students said that the orientation dispelled their misconceptions about the English major and gave them a clearer understanding of the program's essence, academic requirements, and future development directions. This event is an important part of the School's efforts to help freshmen “button the first button” of their university studies. The School will continue to implement its philosophy of cultivating interdisciplinary foreign language talent, helping students strengthen both their humanistic literacy and professional competence, and grow into foreign language talent capable of engaging with the world.
